Upgrading Northamptonshire County Council’s Access Control System

The Challenge

Northamptonshire County Council oversees numerous towns, including Northampton, Kettering, Corby, and Wellingborough. Across these areas, the council operates multiple administrative buildings, each previously equipped with an aging proprietary access control system from ADT. Installed in the mid-1990s, the system was failing and difficult to maintain due to its closed protocol nature, which only the original installer could support. Seeking a more user-friendly and flexible solution, the council decided to upgrade to an open protocol database system.

Our Solutions

Following a successful tender bid, Ninehundred Communications was chosen to provide a cost-effective, operationally functional, and scalable access control solution. The project involved upgrading five major administrative centres, each presenting unique installation challenges, from the historic Grade I listed County Hall to modern purpose-built facilities. We implemented a new access control system using ACT (Access Control Technology) with ACT Pro software and controllers.
The system included 53 access points, accommodating over 3,000 council employees across multiple sites. A high-specification server and client infrastructure were installed, enabling authorised users to efficiently manage access permissions.
