Costa Coffee Electrical Installation at Sainsbury’s Supermarket

A new Costa Coffee café delivered within a live supermarket environment, combining functionality, safety, and design-led electrical installation.

Brief About the Project

Ninehundred Communications Group was appointed by Jephsons Shopfitters to deliver the full electrical installation for a new Costa Coffee café located within an operational Sainsbury’s supermarket.

The café fit-out was completed within a live retail environment, requiring close coordination with store management, strict health and safety controls, and careful scheduling to minimise disruption to customers and ongoing supermarket operations.

The Challenge

Delivering a complete electrical installation within a trading supermarket presented several logistical and safety challenges. All works had to be carried out while the store remained fully operational, with minimal noise, disruption, or impact on customers and staff.

The installation also needed to align with Costa Coffee’s brand and interior design standards, ensuring a high-quality visual finish while meeting all current electrical, fire safety, and emergency lighting regulations.

In addition, multiple systems – lighting, power, access control, and air conditioning needed to be integrated into a cohesive, easy-to-manage solution for store staff.

The Solution

Working closely with Jephsons Shopfitters, Ninehundred delivered a fully coordinated electrical solution designed, installed, tested, and commissioned in line with current regulations and industry best practice.

The solution included:

A new containment system throughout the café, incorporating medium-duty tray work for cable distribution and structural support for suspended pendant lighting
A fully compliant emergency lighting system designed in accordance with BS 5266, including illuminated exit signage and emergency luminaires
New and reconnected lighting integrated into a last man out control system, allowing safe and efficient shutdown at close of trade
Small power installations serving back-of-house areas, kitchen equipment, staff spaces, and the customer counter
Additional power and USB charging points within the seating area to enhance customer experience
A standalone access control system securing back-of-house areas, incorporating a magnetic lock, keypad, and proximity fob reader
Dedicated electrical supplies for air conditioning equipment, complete with local isolation and integration into the last man out switching system

All circuits were fully labelled, tested, and certified as part of the final handover.

The Result

The project was delivered safely, on programme, and to a consistently high standard, despite the complexities of working within a live supermarket environment.

Close collaboration with Jephsons Shopfitters and clear communication with Sainsbury’s store management ensured smooth delivery with no disruption to daily retail operations.

By providing an integrated electrical solution covering power, lighting, life safety, access control, and data infrastructure, Ninehundred reinforced its position as a trusted delivery partner for retail and hospitality fit-out projects.
