Get Ready for the DfE’s Upcoming Funding Release

The Department for Education has announced a £45 million investment to help schools upgrade their digital infrastructure starting with high-speed Wi-Fi.

FUTUREPROOF Your Path to a Fully Funded Wi-Fi Upgrade

The Department for Education (DfE) is investing £45 million to help eligible schools upgrade their digital infrastructure improving internet speeds, coverage, and connectivity across the board. This is a continuation of the scheme to ensure no child is left behind, following on from their Connect The Classroom initiative in 2023. At Ninehundred Communications Group, we’ve helped schools throughout the UK successfully implement high-speed network upgrades with minimal disruption.

With over 40 years of experience in education and infrastructure, we know exactly what’s needed to meet the strict DfE criteria and deliver reliable, futureproof results.

Schools currently receiving targeted intervention through the regional improvement for standards and excellence (RISE) programme will be eligible for connect the classroom.

ENHANCE Why Upgrade Your School’s Wi-Fi?

Seamless Learning Experiences
A strong and stable connection means no more dropouts during lessons. Teachers can confidently deliver interactive and digital-led classes, knowing their tools and resources will work as they should.

Support for Modern EdTech Tools
From Chromebooks to interactive whiteboards and online testing platforms, today’s classroom tech demands reliable high-speed Wi-Fi. Upgraded infrastructure ensures your school can support devices at scale without performance issues.

Reduced Network Downtime
Better infrastructure leads to fewer IT issues and less time spent troubleshooting. With centralised monitoring and modern network management systems, maintenance is proactive—not reactive.

Enhanced Security and Safeguarding
Wi-Fi 6 networks come with enhanced encryption and safety features that protect staff and student data. These networks are also more robust against modern threats, helping you stay compliant with cyber security standards like Cyber Essentials.

Better Operational Efficiency for Multi-Academy Trusts
For MATs, a consistent Wi-Fi infrastructure enables smoother collaboration, centralised IT management, and scalable solutions across sites.

Eligibility Priority Schools For Funding

The Department for Education has announced that schools that are part of the RISE programme will be eligible for connect the classroom. Eligible schools will be contacted directly by the DfE and receive funding if they fall below their wifi connectivity standards.

These standards include:

  • using the latest wireless network standard approved by the Wi-Fi Alliance
  • having a fully functional signal from a wireless network throughout the school or college buildings and externally, where required
  • having a solution that can centrally manage the wireless network
  • installing security features to stop unauthorised access

If you believe your school qualifies but haven’t yet been contacted by a DfE advisor, don’t wait,  reach out to our team, and we’ll support you in confirming your eligibility and starting the process.

Getting Started Your Questions Covered

Wi-Fi 6 is the latest wireless standard that delivers faster speeds, greater capacity, and improved efficiency especially in environments where many devices are connected at once. Upgrading your Wi-Fi network can help with connecting classrooms, students, and teachers more reliably, ensuring smoother access to digital learning tools, online resources, and collaborative platforms without interruptions or lag.

With more students and staff using digital devices, Wi-Fi 6 ensures a stronger, more stable connection. It improves the quality of online learning, speeds up downloads, and reduces buffering and connectivity issues, helping to Close the Digital Divide

Upgrading to a modern Wi-Fi 6 network supports more devices simultaneously, enabling seamless use of digital tools like Chromebooks, tablets, and interactive whiteboards. This directly supports connecting classrooms by allowing teachers and students to collaborate, learn, and teach without connectivity issues.

High-speed infrastructure includes up-to-date networking components such as Category 6A cabling, managed switches, and next-gen access points. It enables faster internet speeds, supports more devices, and ensures your school network is future-ready.

The Department for Education is contacting eligible schools directly via email or post. If you haven’t heard anything yet, we can help you check your eligibility and guide you on the next steps.

This scheme has previously run as Connect the Classroom. Schools which received funding from this will not be eligible for additional funding.

The DfE’s “Core 6” sets out the minimum standards your school’s network must meet by 2030. These include:

  • Broadband Internet
  • Wireless Networks
  • Network Switches
  • Digital Leadership
  • Filtering and Monitoring
  • Cyber Security

At Ninehundred Communications, we have worked with many schools in upgrading all of the above, our experts have a wealth of experience in the Core 6 and in implementing them to create a safer and more advanced learning environment.
