Lighting Upgrade at a School

Bourne Grammar’s Energy-Saving Lighting Upgrade

A large secondary school modernises its lighting to save energy, cut costs, and enhance classroom comfort.

About the School

Bourne Grammar School is a thriving secondary grammar with nearly 1,800 students. The site is a blend of architectural eras, ranging from 1950s buildings to newly constructed blocks completed within the last two years. As the school expanded, its infrastructure reflected this evolution — and the lighting systems were no exception.

The Challenge

Before the project, much of the school’s lighting was outdated fluorescent technology — inefficient, costly to maintain, and increasingly difficult to replace as regulations phased out fluorescent tubes.

The lighting across classrooms and corridors was inconsistent, with some areas too dim and others suffering from glare on whiteboards. Combined with rising energy costs, the school recognised an urgent need to modernise, save energy, and improve light quality.

“Some of the lighting just wasn’t fit for purpose anymore. When we saw the potential savings — financially and environmentally — it felt like a no-brainer.”

The Solution

After obtaining multiple quotes, Bourne Grammar selected Ninehundred Communications Group to deliver a full LED lighting upgrade across the site. The project began with a comprehensive lighting survey to assess requirements by area and identify where emergency lighting was also needed.

When the survey revealed that the emergency lighting system required attention, We adapted the plan quickly, designing and installing a fully compliant emergency lighting solution alongside the new classroom and corridor fittings.

The upgrades included:

  • Modern LED lighting tailored to each learning space
  • Glare-reducing fittings to enhance visibility on whiteboards
  • Full emergency lighting compliance across classrooms and corridors
  • Energy-efficient, long-life units to reduce maintenance costs

The work was carefully scheduled to align with school holiday windows, ensuring minimal disruption to teaching.

“They made the process so simple. Whether it was out-of-hours or during holidays, they worked around us. Everything was handled really well.”

The Result: Before & After

The impact was immediate.

Teachers reported that classrooms were brighter and more comfortable, without glare or flicker. The school’s energy consumption dropped significantly, translating into noticeable savings on electricity bills.

By switching to LED technology, Bourne Grammar not only reduced energy costs but also took meaningful steps toward its carbon reduction goals — a change that benefits both staff and students for years to come.

“The difference is dramatic. The classrooms are lighter, clearer, and easier to teach in. And the savings speak for themselves.”
