Delivering a Costa Coffee Fit-Out in a Live Supermarket Environment

Ninehundred Communications Group has successfully delivered the full electrical installation for a new Costa Coffee café located within a live Sainsbury’s supermarket, working in partnership with Jephsons Shopfitters.

Working Within a Live Retail Space

Delivering electrical installations within live retail environments requires more than technical expertise—it demands careful planning, coordination, and an uncompromising focus on safety. Our recent project delivering the full electrical installation for a new Costa Coffee café inside a Sainsbury’s supermarket is a strong example of how we approach complex retail and hospitality fit-outs.

Appointed by Jephsons Shopfitters, We were responsible for the complete electrical installation to support the new café. With the supermarket remaining fully operational throughout the works, the project required meticulous scheduling and close collaboration with store management to ensure customer experience and daily operations were unaffected.

Strict health and safety controls were implemented at every stage, with works planned to minimise disruption while maintaining full compliance with current regulations.

A Fully Integrated Electrical Solution

The scope of works covered all electrical services required for the café fit-out. This included containment systems, power, lighting, emergency lighting, data cabling, access control, and dedicated electrical supplies for air conditioning equipment.

A new containment system was installed throughout the café, incorporating medium-duty tray work that served both as a cable management solution and as structural support for suspended pendant lighting. Particular attention was paid to alignment and integration with architectural features to ensure a clean, high-quality finish in customer-facing areas.

Lighting plays a critical role in both customer experience and operational safety. New lighting was installed where required, with existing lighting reconnected as appropriate. All lighting circuits were integrated into a last man out control system, giving staff a simple and reliable method to safely isolate lighting and associated systems at the end of trading hours.

A fully compliant emergency lighting system was designed and installed in accordance with BS 5266, including illuminated exit signage and emergency luminaires to support safe evacuation routes across all areas of the café.

A Seamless Delivery

Despite the challenges of working within a live supermarket environment, the project was delivered safely, on programme, and to a consistently high standard. Close collaboration with Jephsons Shopfitters and clear communication with Sainsbury’s store management ensured a smooth installation with no disruption to customers or trading.
