900IoT Weather Station Installed on Network Rail Route

Helping the railway gain a clearer picture of changing weather conditions through connected IoT technology.

Ninehundred helps Network Rail get real-time data and respond to severe weather events

Ninehundred Communications Group is proud to have delivered weather monitoring technology for Network Rail’s Wales and Borders route, which has become the first Network Rail route to install local weather stations on existing GSM-R railway communication masts.

Ten weather stations have been installed across Wales and the Borders, providing localised environmental data to help Network Rail better understand the conditions affecting its infrastructure and support more informed operational decisions.

By combining IoT technology with existing railway communications infrastructure, the project demonstrates how connected monitoring solutions can deliver valuable insights in challenging environments.

The Technology Behind the Project

At the heart of the installation is the 900IoT Weather Station, a solar-powered, LoRaWAN®-enabled solution designed to monitor key atmospheric conditions continuously.

The weather stations measure:

  • Rainfall – providing local data on precipitation.
  • Wind speed and direction – helping teams understand changing wind conditions.
  • Temperature and humidity – capturing local atmospheric conditions.
  • Barometric pressure – adding further insight into changing weather patterns.

Collecting measurements directly from locations on the railway helps fill gaps in existing weather monitoring coverage, complementing established forecasting services with site-specific data.

The information can help Network Rail and its weather forecasting partners build a more detailed understanding of conditions across the route, supporting decisions about inspections, response resources and appropriate operational measures.

Making Better Use of Existing Infrastructure

A key aspect of this project is the use of existing GSM-R railway communication masts to host the weather monitoring equipment.

Rather than requiring entirely new structures, the installation makes use of infrastructure already in place across the railway. This provides the mounting height needed for weather observations while helping reduce the additional infrastructure required for deployment.

The project highlights the potential for existing communications assets to support additional IoT applications, extending their value beyond connectivity alone.

With solar power and rechargeable battery backup, the weather stations are also designed to operate in remote outdoor locations where access to conventional power may be limited.
